The Deal

Anglers can hone their fly-fishing or spey-casting skills against the backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales during one, two, three or four hours of tuition. The session is led by a seasoned instructor, who covers overhead and spey casting techniques and teaches catching methods such as floating and sinking lines. Other areas include different retrieves, how to recognise what’s hatching and where to cast. Each participant is permitted to take home one blue or rainbow trout, which they’ll learn to fillet. To help aid the learning process, multiple-hour sessions can be split so each bite of new knowledge can be put into practice before students learn new tips.

The Merchant

Helwith Bridge Fly Fishery encompasses a 4.5-acre spring-fed lake with views of Pen-y-ghent. The lake is 30 feet deep and home to an array of trout, including triploid, blue and brown varieties. Group events and tuition are available, and the site also features a parking area and a fishing hut with supplies, a wood burner and a cooker.
