What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is derived from ancient Chinese medicine. It involves fine disposable needles inserted at certain sites of the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes. Scientific evidence shows the treatment can stimulate nerves under the skin and in muscle tissue, resulting in the body producing pain relieving substances such as endorphins.

What is cupping?

Generally, cupping is combined with acupuncture in one treatment, but it can also be used alone. The cup is left in place on the skin for a few minutes and forms blood stasis. Cupping can be used as an alternative to acupuncture. Cupping is thought to affect tissues up to four inches deep.

What is muscle energy techniques (MET)?

Popularly known as MET, muscle energy technique is a form of stretching, commonly used by many professional therapists. It involves the active contraction of a muscle by the client against a resistive force provided by a second party (i.e. the therapists). It aims to lengthen postural muscles, which are prone to shortening.

What is moxibustion?

Indirect moxibustion involves both acupuncture needles and moxa. A needle is inserted into an acupoint and retained. The moxa, which is the shape and size of a cigar, is then held over the tip of the needle, generating heat to the point and surrounding area.
