Two emotionally charged days await, filled with game drives led by experienced rangers in search of the famous Big Five and other fascinating wildlife.
Designed for travellers seeking independence without compromising on comfort, this self-drive tour offers a perfect blend of charming towns, stunning landscapes and unforgettable experiences in the heart of the African savannah.
Your day-by-day itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Cape Town
Day 2: The Cape of Good Hope Peninsula
Day 3: On the Wine Route
Day 4: Cape Town - Mabula Reserve
Day 5 and 6: Mabula Reserve
Day 7: Private Reserve - Johannesburg
Day 8: Johannesburg - Return flight
Your detailed itinerary
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN CAPE TOWN
At the airport, you will be met by an English-speaking representative, who will give you your travel documents and help you collect your hire car.
You will then have free time to explore the city at your own pace. Nestled between the sea and the mountains, Cape Town will captivate you with its way of life, its cuisine and its spectacular natural beauty. The peninsula boasts exceptional flora, bustling markets and a unique atmosphere.
Recommended visits include a city tour, a climb up Table Mountain (weather permitting) and a panoramic view from Signal Hill.
Meals are not included
DAY 2: THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE PENINSULA
After breakfast.
Here's a suggestion for organising your day:
Take a full-day trip to explore the Cape of Good Hope Peninsula. You'll pass beautiful beaches such as Clifton, Bantry Bay, Camps Bay and Noordhoek, all renowned for their pristine white sands.
Stop off at Hout Bay for a cruise to Seal Island, where you can watch hundreds of sea lions frolicking in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
You will then visit the charming coastal village of Simon's Town, with a stop at Boulders Beach, famous for its colony of over 700 African penguins.
Finally, explore the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, often mistaken for the southernmost point of Africa. From the lighthouse at the tip of the Cape, the spectacular view will give you the impression of being at the end of the world.
Lunch and dinner are not included
DAY 3: ON THE WINE ROUTE
Breakfast.
We recommend that you explore the famous Wine Route, in the heart of the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek regions.
With over 100,000 hectares of vineyards, South Africa has become the world's eighth-largest wine producer. Its wines are renowned for offering excellent value for money and rival those of other major wine-producing regions. Only the Cape Province has an ideal climate for growing grapes, which is why most producers are based in this region. The Wine Route, formed by the triangle of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, is just a few kilometres from Cape Town.
Lunch and dinner are not included.
Return to Cape Town at the end of the day.
Overnight in a guesthouse or hotel.
DAY 4: CAPE TOWN - MABULA RESERVE

Drive to Cape Town airport, where you will drop off your hire car, then fly to Johannesburg (flight included).

Lunch is not included.
Afternoon at leisure to enjoy the lodge facilities.
Depending on your arrival time, you will be offered a ‘tea-break’ before setting off on your first 4x4 safari with an English-speaking ranger (shared safari) until sunset in the reserve.

The two-day safari programme will be as follows:

USEFUL INFORMATION
Entry requirements:
British passport holders (ordinary, diplomatic or service) are exempt from prior visa requirements for tourist stays in South Africa of less than 90 days. A 90-day residence permit will be issued upon entry to South Africa.
Passports must have two blank pages and be valid for at least 30 days after the planned exit date from South Africa. Travellers who do not meet these requirements will be turned away on arrival.
Vaccinations:
No vaccinations are compulsory, but certain vaccinations are recommended; make sure you are up to date with your usual vaccinations, as well as those relating to all the geographical areas you will be visiting.
It is strongly recommended that you are up to date with your diphtheria, tetanus and polio (DTP) vaccinations, as well as your rubella, mumps and measles (MMR) vaccinations, given that the region is high-risk for contracting these diseases. It is also advisable to be vaccinated against tuberculosis.
Depending on local travel conditions, vaccinations against typhoid fever, meningitis and viral hepatitis A and B may be recommended.
Depending on the conditions and location of the trip, vaccination against rabies may also be recommended. Seek advice from your doctor or an international vaccination centre.
Areas where malaria is still common (classified as Zone 3 in terms of resistance) are found in the provinces of Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal, particularly in the Kruger National Park region, which borders Mozambique, Eswatini and Zimbabwe.
Malaria is a potentially serious parasitic disease that is transmitted through mosquito bites. There are two complementary methods of preventing malaria: protecting yourself against mosquitoes and taking medication. Taking traditional measures to protect against mosquitoes in the evening and at night is strongly recommended.
General preventive measures to protect against mosquitoes:
Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting, covering clothing;
Use skin repellents: see the ‘Health Risks’ section at https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/south-africa
Protect your accommodation (mosquito nets, electric diffusers, coils, air conditioning, etc.);
Destroy potential mosquito breeding sites (containers of stagnant water such as saucers under flower pots, gutters, tyres, etc.).
To protect yourself from digestive or contact contamination:
Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or hydro-alcoholic solutions, especially before and after eating or using the toilet;
Make sure food is of good quality and cooked properly;
Avoid eating raw or undercooked food (fish, meat, poultry, milk);
Peel fruit and vegetables or wash them thoroughly (with clean water);
Avoid raw vegetables, shellfish, reheated dishes and cold buffets;
In urban areas, tap water is safe to drink. In rural areas, however, drink only bottled water or drinks, or water that has been made potable (filtered, boiled or, failing that, disinfected);
Avoid ice cubes and ice cream, as well as fresh fruit juices, raw vegetables and unpeeled fruit;
Only consume pasteurised or boiled milk.
