Colombo City Tour

This Colombo city tour takes you around the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo. Buzzing during the daytime, this colourful and culturally-rich city offers a fascinating insight into Sri Lanka's national psyche. During your short stay, you can visit the former Dutch Wolfendhal Church (built in 1749), a Hindu temple, the famous Gangarama temple facing Lake Beira. Walking around the city, you will also see a plethora of shopping centres with designer brands, beautifully landscaped gardens and colonial quarters such as the Dutch Hospital.

Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Colombo

DAY 2 | Dambulla

Afterwards, drive to Dambulla and visit the Millennium Elephant Orphanage en route.

Elephant Orphanage - Optional

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding facility for wild Asian elephants, located in the village of Pinnawala, 8 miles northeast of the town of Kegalle, in the province of Sabaragamuwa, Sri Lanka. Pinnawala has the largest captive elephant herd in the world. Transfer to the hotel and check in.

In the evening, visit Minneriya National Park.

Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park is located between Habarana and Polonnaruwa. Covering an area of 8890 hectares, the park is an ideal place to observe elephants and leopards. The park's vegetation consists of mixed evergreens and scrubland. The important feature of this park is that the Minneriya Reservoir, built in the 3rd century, is located in the park. During the dry season, the Minneriya Reservoir becomes the ideal place to observe natural wildlife. Minneriya National Park is home to 24 species of mammals, 160 species of birds, 75 species of butterflies, 9 species of amphibians, 26 species of fish and 25 species of reptiles. Transfer to the hotel.

Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Dambulla.

DAY 3 | Sigiriya

After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, visit Sigiriya.

Sigiriya

This UNESCO World Heritage Site, a spectacular rock fortress, is one of Sri Lanka's main attractions. The most impressive features of this unique complex are the water gardens, the frescoes of beautiful girls, the wall of mirrors with ancient graffiti on it, the lion platform and the 1.6-hectare summit, which was entirely covered with buildings during Sigiriya's glory days. Built by King Kashyapa (477-495 AD), the 'Lion Rock' is an unusually beautiful citadel that soars a stunning 200m out of the scrubby jungle.

Walking around a village

Walk through this archetypal Sri Lankan village. The trek begins with a scenic walk along the bund of a Wewa (man-made reservoir). The amazing birdlife, butterflies and the chance of spotting a crocodile only add to the charm of this hike. Watch the villagers go about their morning fishing or washing clothes on the outskirts of the lake. We start by fording a shallow stream, then cross a wider tributary using a local farmer's catamaran to inspect the Chena crops (slash and burn agriculture). With the help of the farmer, pick some fresh vegetables from the field. Transfer to the hotel.

Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Dambulla.

DAY 4 | Kandy

After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, you will head to Kandy. En route, you can visit the Dambulla cave temple and the Spice Garden.

Dambulla cave temple

Located in the North Central Province, this UNESCO World Heritage Site, which dates back to the 1st century BC, is an amazing complex of 05 caves, first used as a refuge by an ancient king who commissioned magnificent images carved into the living rock on regaining his throne. Subsequent kings made further improvements and the caves contain more than 150 images of the Buddha, the largest of which is a colossal 15-metre figure. There are inscriptions in the caves dating back to the 2nd century BC and on the walls there are numerous paintings, most of which belong to the Kandy period (early 19th century).

After the tour, return to Kandy and visit the Matale Spice Garden en route.

Spice Garden

The island has been famous for its spices since medieval times and is considered to be one of the main reasons why the Europeans conquered the island and the Arabs traded there from the 14th century. The best thing about this visit is the chance to identify the real plants producing the spice that you know so well and use in your everyday life. A qualified guide will give a guided tour of the garden and a presentation of its products. Enjoy a special head and shoulder massage in the spice garden.

Arrive at the hotel.

In the evening, you can take a tuk tuk ride and tour the city of Kandy. Visit a batik factory, a gemstone museum and the Tooth Relic Temple in Kandy.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

A charming and exotic city, the capital of the hill country and last bastion of the Sinhalese kings is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that retains an aura of grandeur that has not been lost over time. Surrounded by hills, with a tranquil lake at its centre, it is the site of the famous temple dedicated to the Buddha's tooth relic and the Royal Botanical Gardens, home to one of the world's finest collections of orchids.

You can attend a cultural dance in Kandy.

DAY 5 | Nuwara Eliya

After a fresh breakfast, you will drive to Nuwara Eliya, where you can see the tea pickers at work in the tea plantations. You can visit the tea plantation and experience walking among the floppy tea plants and talking to the tea pickers.

Tea factory

Sri Lanka is one of the world's largest tea exporters, with a thriving tea industry dominating the central highlands of the island. Introduced to the country by British tea planter James Taylor in 1867, tea has irreversibly changed the topography, and even the demography, of the country.

Check-in at the hotel.

In the evening you can take a guided tour of Nuwara Eliya, including Victoria Park, the Pink Post Office and St Clare's Waterfall.

Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Nuwara Eliya.

DAY 6 | Yala

After breakfast at the hotel, you will head to Yala and visit the Ravana Waterfall and Ravana Cave en route.

Check-in at the hotel in Yala.

In the evening, experience the wilderness of Yala National Park in 4x4 jeeps.

Yala National Park

Yala National Park is a vast area of forests, grasslands and lagoons bordering the Indian Ocean in south-eastern Sri Lanka. It is home to wild animals such as leopards, elephants and crocodiles, as well as hundreds of bird species. Inland, Sithulpawwa is an ancient Buddhist monastery. The nearby caves contain rock paintings dating back centuries. To the southwest, Magul Maha Viharaya also has ancient Buddhist ruins. Both are places of pilgrimage.
