The Thames Barrier was officially opened by her Majesty the Queen on the 8th May 1984. Following the floods in 1953 that killed over 300 people, it was concluded that there was a need to design a rising sector gate structure that would span the Thames at Woolwich reach to prevent London from flooding. Since becoming operational, the Thames Barrier has closed over 170 times to prevent London from flooding. Visitors to the information centre can learn about the construction and function of the barrier, with a play area for the little ones, and riverside walks taking in views of the barrier and London landmarks. From 8 to 11 May, there will be a special event for the Thames Barrier's 30th anniversary, with additional displays and a 1980's theme. The onsite View Cafe with outdoor and indoor seating offers customers can benefit from 10% off food and drink and a pay and display car park, allows all day parking for £1.50.
