From Our Editors

Run by a dedicated team of volunteers, Elsecar Heritage Railway follows the former Elsecar Branch of the South Yorkshire Railway, which came into use in 1850 and was reopened as a visitor attraction in the 1990s. Guests can ride the mile-long stretch of track as it snakes through rural South Yorkshire to Hemingfield, running beside the Dearne and Dove Canal. The Railway is based at Elsecar Heritage Center with house attractions like a Coal Mining Museum Carriage, licensed buffet, and shop, as well as frequently holding themed events and train driving experiences. A nearby chocolatier, patisserie and craft shops can complete a family day out. The complimentary parking proves useful, with the site located five minutes from the M1 J36.

There was a large antiques fair which we were not aware of and subsequently we wasted alot of time trying to park. The train was just aout to leave the platform and we were not allowed to board. Total waste of time and money especially considering this was originally advertised as afternoon tea which was then downgraded to just a cream tea!

Really enjoyed the cream tea on the steam train. only 1 improvement could be made - an option to have plain scones (not everybody likes currants / sultanas).

Lovely trip. The cream tea was served by really friendly people. As much tea as we could drink. Planning a return trip in the near future.
