Sivananda Yoga Centre is a company providing yoga training. It is located in Felsham Road, Putney, London SW15. It was founded by Swami Vishnudevananda in 1957. The centre is named after Swami Sivananda who was one of India's most renowned yoga masters. Swami Vishnudevananda was a disciple of Swami Sivananda and was sent to the Western world by him to champion the benefits of yoga. Swami Sivananda was the first yoga master to institute a training programme for yoga teachers. The activities in the centre are founded on the basic principles that Swami Sivananda identified as achievable and the keys to a healthy lifestyle. The aim of the centre is to improve exercise, breathing, relaxation, diet and mental attitude. The centre is open seven days a week and offers a wide range of yoga courses. Each day there are “Drop-in” classes. These are open to anyone and particular classes cater for complete beginners, children, pensioners and mothers-to-be. There are also classes aimed at more experienced practitioners. Each Saturday, at 12pm, there is a free “taster” session for those who are new to the centre and wish to try out its facilities. The centre also runs courses of yoga training. Each course is of six sessions and is graded according to the ability of the trainee. There are six levels ranging from “Beginner” to “Advanced”. For those wishing to become yoga teachers, the centre offers a course which will enable them to become certified Hatha Yoga trainers.
