From Our Editors

Wild ponies roam, the landscape rolls, and inky colours run into one another as far as the eye can see across Dartmoor National Park; ten minutes’ drive from the Passage House Hotel’s locale in Newton Abbot. Alternatively, 20 minutes’ drive away sits the seaside town of Torquay, nicknamed ‘The English Riviera’, with the Agatha Christie Mile and Torquay Harbour providing quaint settings in which to spend peaceful afternoons. The modern hotel’s 90 guest bedrooms all feature complimentary Wi-Fi, en suite bathrooms, and tea and coffee making facilities. Out of the window is the Teign Estuary, providing the backdrop of the hotel’s experience. For leisurely mornings and relaxing afternoons, the hotel spa features a fitness suite, pool, steam room and sauna. For extra indulgence, there are beauty and pampering treatments on offer. In the restaurant, the riverside views complement the locally-sourced fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We were a party of 5 with 2 being covered by a Groupon voucher for 3 course Sunday lunch. The "restaurant" staff were very pleasant and accommodating, however the hotel receptionist was not at all welcoming and the food was unpleasant. The starter was good but the fish main course was overcooked Sea Bass and 3 new potatoes but no vegetables or accompaniments at all and the Apple Crumble was over cooked very unpleasant, uneatable and sent back. We wouldn't recommend a meal here. This was very very disappointing as we had driven a long way (90 miles) and dispute the very pleasant location was not an enjoyable experience.

Friendly and attentive waitresses. Excellent view of the estuary from the dining area. The menu was different to what is advertised on Groupon, but it was a nice surprise that we actually had four courses. The pot of filtered coffee with a chocolate mint afterwards was a lovely unexpected bonus. Linen tablecloths and napkins, but the fabric on the chairs were shabby and needed upgrading. Starter (we had prawn salad and mushroom soup) and dessert (we had ice cream and apple crumble) were good portion size and tasty. The only thing that let the food down was the fact that the Roast Beef was very tough. Waitress could see we were struggling to cut the meat so offered us some more gravy, which was very welcome, but a sharper knife would have helped more. We noticed that a couple of other guests were also struggling and complained about the tough roast beef, but we did not as for the money it still seemed good value. Would possibly visit again as it was good value and the meat might be better next time!

This may have been a one off as previously we had a decent Sunday lunch here but this time it was dreadful. Our order was taken after around 10 minutes, 5 minutes later a family opposite ordered theirs. Around 5 minutes later they received their starters. 5 minutes later we called the waitress over to ask where our starters where. She apologised & went to the kitchen, came back to say there had been a mix up & they were on the way. My pate was nice but the bread served was stale, my wife's prawn cocktail was served in a dish with a slice of stale bread on top, not on a plate as normal. The dishes were taken away & shortly afterwards we received our roast beef dinner. What can I say except it was possibly the worst meal we have ever had served. The vegetables were luke warm at best, the gravy thick sparse & not hot. The beef was inedible, totally overlooked & very difficult to cut. We were asked if everything was ok which showed good customer service & when we mentioned the above the food was taken away with an apology with an offer of replacing it. This was turned down & we ordered desserts. We both had apple crumble. How long it had been keeping warm in the oven is anyone's guess but the actual crumble was so hard the majority was left on the plate. Even the cream could not save the day. All in all a terrible dining experience. The waitress was very good & passed our comments to the duty manager who issued a voucher in the form of a letter inviting us back for a replacement Sunday lunch. We will try again in the future as we believe this was a one off based on our previous visit.

Lovely setting overlooking estuary. Food was very tasty and good sized portions. Ask for gravy, custard, cream separately if you don’t like everything covered.
