Located in Hockley, Curious Tavern stands adjacent to The Mercure Hotel. The dimly lit inside welcomes guests with an eerie ambience, created by low lighting, wooden floors and decorative, dark ceiling tiles. The unsettling art of humanoid creatures with heads of wood-animals adds to the atmosphere, together with old-fashioned patterns and lamps appearing in the dining room. Customers can choose to sit at one of the wooden tables or in a dark leather booth to peruse the rich menu and have their meal. The kitchen serves a range of British classics and winter warmers, as well as a selection of pizzas, sandwiches and salads. Meals can be finished with a sweet treat or complemented by a choice of spirit, including wine, gin and mixed cocktails. Every Sunday, the tavern offers a Sunday roast dinner too.
I ordered 1 vegan cream tea for my daughter and 1 ordinary tea for myself. The waitress delivered the vegan part (strips of what looked like poppadoms, with 2 dips). When I questioned where my sandwiches were, she first said the kitchen was closed and couldn't make any more, then said that the vegan part was large enough for two, and that was the total cream tea. Not very impressed, as I had to make do with something I didn't really enjoy, and didn't get what I ordered.
Pizza good. Staff a bit clueless. Aver
It was everything you’d expect about a place called Curious Tavern! The staff were attentive, friendly and helpful! The pizza was delicious! We’ll definitely go back there! Best foodie Groupon I’ve bought this year!
Food arrived stone cold how hard is it to deliver 2 pizzas and a portion of chips hot? There were about 10 people in and only us and one other table eating
The food was cold and had too wait far to long despite not many people being in there
Pizza was very disappointing, the amount of flour on the base made me almost choke and was left in a pile on my plate. Couldn’t finish it due to this. Staff that walked past didn’t ask how meal was or if happy - did not complain as they were completely disinterested. Not likely to ever have pizza there again.

Pleasant but too dark to see the menu - had to use my torch! Pizza ok, decent value for money
It was so dark we had to use our phone torches to read the menu, only 4 pizzas to choose from, couldn't upgrade my small wine to a large and pay the extra, mayonnaise was brought out in a Hellmans bottle, all in all not the best experience. Glad we didn't pay much for it and wouldn't go back
Excellent cocktail afternoon tea throughly recommend.
Most of the pizza selection too spicy for my taste and came slightly burnt round the edges. Good service though
