The picture on the advert is a fair representation as to what we got. VENUE: A contemporary setting, with a bit of a mish-mash style. Black oblong tables and red leather type benches in the booths where we were sat and grey round tables with bright purple and black chairs to the side of us. The decor didn't seem to flow from one area to another. AMBIANCE: - background music was way too loud and the whole place had a bit of a "trying to be" feel about it. CROCKERY: - Clunky stoneware cups with mis-matched teapot and milk jug. Square plates again in a different ware. They should at least be the same style. PRESENTATION: the sandwiches came on an oblong stoneware plate, which fitted with the contemporary venue. The cake stand was, I can only describe as, a black nik-nak shelf, which again fitted the surroundings, but not with any of the crockery. NAPKINS: - Cloth - which is always good. TEA: - Unlimited - Twinings Everyday, which is good for me but too weak for some. SANDWICHES: Ham and mustard on white - the mustard overpowered the taste of the ham. Cream cheese and cucumber on brown/wholemeal maybe. These were ok, but the cream cheese was claggy and the cucumber cut too thick. Smoked salmon and cream cheese on what looked like Rye and was part of a baguette not a finger sandwich. this is a definite no no for afternoon tea. SCONES: - absolutely delicious. there were 2 each and they were small and light with a biscuity texture. A good portion of clotted cream was served in a small tin thing and the jam (Bonne Maman) came in small unopened jars. SWEET TREATS: Chocolate brownies, macaroons, tiny vanilla fruit tarlets were all very nice. But..... the stuff in the glass was really not good. The waiter said it was Tiramisu and being a fan of this particular dessert I was really looking forward to it. So I saved the best until last - or so I thought. The vanilla custardy stuff at the bottom was quite tasteless really and I don't know what they had topped it with but it was awful. I think it was supposed to be some form of ground coffee, but it was awful and left a really bitter after taste. STAFF: - very polite and efficient. OVERALL: yes this was ok. One good thing is that we were asked straight away if we had any dietry requirements. We couldn't get comfortable and relax as you couldn't lean back on the seating and the table was a little high for my liking. It fits with the city location and I assume appeals to those not wanting to linger too long. REVISIT: Would we go there again? Not sure. Its not a venue i would go rushing back to, but neither would i say never again. MARKS 5/10
