The Merchant

Located in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the ArcelorMittal Orbit’s unusual steel form, created by sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor and designer Cecil Balmond, commemorates 2012’s games, as well as London’s energy and creativity. Based around the idea of an orbit, a continuous line that loops up and back down around itself, Britain’s largest sculpture doesn’t raise in a straight line and is made from 2,000 tonnes of steel, with more than 60% of the structure formed of recycled metal. The structure not only offers commanding views of the capital but at night is lit up by 250 spotlights and is surrounded by parkland, with plenty of meadows, wetlands and waterways to explore. The Orbit also boasts a gift shop and restaurant serving up a host of East End-inspired dishes, while venue hire is offered alongside events such as abseiling experiences and Orbit Lates.

The Telegraph

The ArcelorMittal Orbit has scored an impressive 4/5 from both TripAdvisor and The Telegraph’s art critic, and boasts over 3,400 likes on Facebook. Several recent visitors were keen to praise the views and the striking look of the structure, while The Telegraph’s critic highlighted its asymmetrical take on the very idea of a tower.

“Yet overall the Orbit provides a challenging twist on the idea of the tower as viewing point and visitor attraction that is inspiring and uplifting. I loved it.”
