With the iconic spires of Oxford University in the background, guests can kick off this two-course meal with a starter such as a duck and black pudding terrine (usually £6.50), or a beetroot, apple and pecan salad (£5.50). Next up is the main event, featuring a choice of seasonal dishes from cuisines across Europe. Diners could feast on fresh fish with seasonal vegetables (£15), rabbit leg with braised gem lettuce, carrots, tarragon and a grain mustard sauce (£14.50), or a vegetarian-friendly dish such as toasted cauliflower with raisins and a root vegetable and green lentil nage (£12.50). The dining experience is given a fizzy twist by a glass of Prosecco each (£5.95).

The Merchant
The chefs at Ashmolean Dining Room craft a considered blend of European and British cuisine for their diverse menu. Locally-sourced ingredients form the basis of the dishes, which can be tucked into amidst an elegant, glass-fronted interior or on the roof terrace. Based on the top floor of the Ashmolean Museum, the eatery gives panoramic views of the spires of Oxford University, providing a suitably antiquarian backdrop for the restaurant’s quaint afternoon tea served daily from 3pm. Lead by Cardiff-born Head Chef Alun Roberts, the kitchen serves lunch seven days a week and dinner Friday and Saturday evenings until 10pm. Meals can be paired with a glass or bottle of wine chosen from a wide-ranging menu, with German riesling sitting alongside chianti and rioja in the selection.
