Groupon's Guide To Athens
Rich with history yet beating to a modern European tune, Athens, the capital city of Greece, balances a maze of busy tavernas, restored historical sites, and tree-lined promenades linking marble temples to neoclassical museums.
Athens is home to The Acropolis, a famous citadel boasting ancient architectural wonders, with the sacred structure of the Parthenon foremost among them. For a little more background knowledge, the Kanellopoulous Museum hides a collection of jewellery, pottery, and Byzantine icons. Honouring the Olympian Gods, the Statue of Athena Promachos and the Temple of Zeus offer travellers a peek into the ancient and mythical world of Hellenic art and culture, while visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the golden age of Athens may head to the 6th century Theatre of Dionysus. The climate in the capital city of Greece is Mediterranean, with hot wet summers and rainy winters. Between July and September, Athens receives a great level of sunshine. During daytime the average temperatures stand at 33°C, with little chance of rainfall. Autumn may be the best time to visit the city. Night times are pleasantly cool in October, but in November the temperature can drop down close to 10°C, and rainfall is seen more often in this period. Winter is mild, but colder temperatures are possible and the city can receive snowfall on occasions. Like autumn, spring is a great time to visit Athens, with pleasant temperatures and low rainfall.
Groupon's Guide To Santorini
An ancient Greek island formed in a volcanic eruption, Santorini is a bundle of cultural and natural attractions. Historical and cultural sites can be found in the Ancient Akrotiri, while the volcanic beaches of the island feature a variety of white, red and black sands.
Adjacent to the island’s capital, Imerovigli is a traditional Greek village situated in an island caldera. Offering glimmering views over the Aegean Sea, the area is famous for its sunset frames and striking landscapes. Its amphitheatre-like shape, with the white houses sketched on the deep blue of the Aegean Sea, allows tourists to wander around the narrow paths and try out the traditional taverns, where fresh local food is served. For a taste of history, tourists may head to the Skaros Venetian Castle or see the churches of Ai-Stratis, Panagia and the Theoskepasti that are built in a Cycladic architectural style.
Groupon's Guide To Mykonos
The cosmopolitan Greek island of Mykonos is placed in the heart of the Cyclades, a group of islands in the Aegean Sea, and is famous for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, vibrant nightlife and cultural attractions. One of Greece's most iconic islands, Mykonos also boasts a lively bar culture, juxtaposed with historic architecture and 365 churches.
Travellers can take an evening stroll along the Kalafatis seafront, stopping for cocktails or a bite to eat in one of the many beachside bars, or visit the famous church of Panagia Paraportiani, whose hushed 17th-century halls consist of five conjoined temples. Further away, Mykonos Town allures travellers with a labyrinth of narrow streets that are lined with white-washed houses, boutiques, religious architecture and waterfront restaurants. Tourists may also observe the Mykonos historic windmills dotted around the island which were built in the 16th century by the Venetians and now serve as home to the locals. After dark, guests may slip on some dancing shoes and head to the island's famous clubs and bars for late night partying by the sandy beaches.
