SELF-DRIVING TOUR OF PUGLIA
It is one of Italy's least known regions, yet one of the wildest and most typical...
Endless stretches of olive groves bathed by two crystal-clear seas, three UNESCO World Heritage sites, ancestral traditions that live on: Apulia, also known by its Italian name Puglia, is a region brimming with riches inherited from its history, culture, gastronomy and mild, sunny climate.
Whether it's the mountainous region of the Gargano, the villages that can be reached along small country roads through arid lands bordered by olive groves and vineyards, or the wild beaches and coves that surround the region, Puglia gives you the opportunity to discover another Italy, far from the classic itineraries...
Your itinerary, day by day:
Day 1 - Bari – Alberobello Region
Day 2 - Alberobello Region – Matera
Day 3 - Alberobello Bari – Polignano A Mare Monopoli
Day 4 - Alberobello
Day 5 - Conversano – Brindisi Lecce
Day 6 - Lecce – Otranto Galatina – Gallipoli – Lecce
Day 7 - Lecce – Santa Maria Di Leuca Or Porto Cesareo – Lecce
Day 8 - Lecce – Bari
Your detailed itinerary
Day 1 - Bari – Conversano Region
Bari, Castellana Grotte.
On arrival in Bari, pick up your hire car at the airport and drive to Conversano. Take time to stroll through the historic centre and relax on one of the many terraces... Overnight in the Conversano area.
Day 2 - Conversano – Matera – Conversano
Matera, Castellana Grotte.
A stroll through Matera is a must, to admire the "Sassi", the houses of the troglodytic districts formed by white buildings stacked one on top of one another, so that the roofs serve as streets. You'll discover this fascinating town as you wander through a vast complex of galleries and caves carved right out of the tufa! You will then travel to the Conversano region for the night.
Day 3 - Conversano Bari – Polignano A Mare Monopoli – Conversano
Monopoli, Castellana Grotte.
Polignano A Mare.
Discover the medieval old town of Bari, with its typical atmosphere and winding alleys and stairways, often hiding women preparing fresh pasta right in front of their houses! Bari is also home to two beautiful churches dedicated to the city's patron saints. It's always a pleasure to take your time in Bari...
Then head for the coast, to Polignano A Mare, offering a beautiful panorama of houses clinging to the cliffs... A lovely stroll through the winding little streets steeped in history and opening out onto the sea. Nearby, in Monopoli, the medieval centre is well worth a visit, as is the beautiful view from the castle...
Overnight stay in the Conversano region.
Day 4 - Conversano – Alborebello Ostuni – Conversano
Alberobello, Ostuni, Castellana Grotte.
Then, it's time to head for Alberobello, a must on any trip to Puglia and a UNESCO-listed site. Enjoy wandering through the narrow winding streets and discovering the "trulli", the unique conical-roofed dwellings typical of the region. Enjoy an aperitif lunch in a "trullo" restaurant, one of our favourite addresses in Alberobello. Then, head for Ostuni, built on three hills and overlooking endless olive groves. The old town reveals its picturesque side through its narrow streets dotted with white houses and Baroque or Renaissance palaces. Overnight in the Conversano area.
Day 5 - Conversano – Brindisi Lecce
Otranto, Gallipoli, Galatina.
The easternmost tip of Italy is Otranto, where a dialect very close to Greek is still spoken. Take a stroll through the old town and visit the cathedral, with its amazing mosaic floor. Head inland to discover the charming little town of Galatina, where you can visit the chapel of San Paolo, where the "tarante", women bitten by tarantulas, found a cure for their illness. Then head for the Gallipoli peninsula, with its whitewashed houses and terraced roofs, and enjoy the breathtaking views as you stroll along the ramparts. Overnight in the Lecce region. A good place to dine in Lecce is "Alle Due Corte", where you can try the typical ‘Ciceri e Tria’ dish made with home-made pasta and chickpeas.
Day 6 - Lecce – Otranto – Galatina – Gallipoli – Lecce
Breakfast at the hotel.
Suggestions for places to visit:
Take a trip to Otranto in the east of Italy, where a dialect very close to Greek is still spoken. You can stroll through the old town and visit the cathedral with its amazing mosaic floor.
Head inland to discover the charming little town of Galatina, where you can visit the chapel of San Paolo, where the "tarantas", women bitten by tarantulas, found a cure for their illness. Then head for the Gallipoli peninsula with its whitewashed houses and terraced roofs and enjoy the breathtaking views as you stroll along the ramparts.
Overnight stay in the Lecce area:
Our top recommendation for dinner in Lecce is "Alle Due Corte", where you can sample the local speciality "Ciceri e Tria", homemade pasta with chickpea (this is merely a suggestion, as dinner is not included).
Day 7 - Lecce – Santa Maria Di Leuca Or Porto Cesareo – Lecce
Lecce, Santa Maria Di Leuca.
Porto Cesareo.
Enjoy a relaxing day in this region, which boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in southern Italy. Overnight stay in Lecce or Galatina.
Day 8 - Lecce Bari
Bari, Lecce.
This is the end of your journey through the magnificent wilderness of Puglia. Return your vehicle to Bari airport and fly back to France. The order of the stages may be reversed due to local imperatives, but the overall programme will be respected.
