Soho London: Food to Queue For Walking and Eating Audio Tour by VoiceMap
Soho London: Food to Queue For Walking and Eating Audio Tour by VoiceMap

Soho is the centre of London's restaurant scene. Reflective of the people who live and cook here, it's like a treasure chest of dishes from all over the world - from British pork belly and Israeli hummus to Burmese noodles, Taiwanese buns, and Spanish tapas. It's also one of the hardest, most competitive areas to run a restaurant, because everyone wants theirs to be successful.

Over the last 8-10 years London has seen an incredible restaurant boom, and much of this started in Soho. On this tour, Soho: Food to Queue For, I want to show you the great places that have been instrumental in that boom. Along the way, I'll tell you what they serve, why people like them, and I'll also recommend a few places that people in the industry love to visit.

Wapping and the old London Docks Walking Audio Tour by VoiceMap
Wapping and the old London Docks Walking Audio Tour by VoiceMap

The most famous building in Wapping is a pub, The Prospect of Whitby, which was a favourite with pirates and smugglers as well as with Charles Dickens and Samuel Pepys. This ancient village which stretches between the Tower of London and Limehouse has always been associated with seafarers. They tended to live a life apart from the rest of London, although in the eighteenth century the 36 pubs along the riverfront attracted many visitors including Dr Samuel Johnson. Three of these pubs survive.

The London Docks were built in the early nineteenth century and were famous for the import of rum, wine and tobacco. The docks were closed in 1969, but many of the former wharves and warehouses have been preserved and converted into modern apartments. This retains the atmosphere of the past although the sense of danger evoked by Charles Dickens's novels has vanished.

Southwark: London's Historic Entertainment District Audio Tour by VoiceMap

On this walk we follow in the footsteps of Chaucer and Shakespeare across London Bridge to the south bank of the Thames. Here is the district of Southwark, which used to have a murky reputation, as it provided the entertainment, manufacture and trade that City dwellers wanted but were not permitted within the boundaries of the City.

You will visit ancient inns, churches, hospitals, markets and prisons, covering nearly 2,000 years of London history. The walk ends at the massive former Bankside Power Station, now converted into one of London's top tourist attractions - the Tate Modern Art Gallery.

Bloomsbury's Contribution to Health Care History Walking Audio Tour by VoiceMap
Bloomsbury's Contribution to Health Care History Walking Audio Tour by VoiceMap

In the 18th century the only health care provided in Bloomsbury was the Foundling Hospital, one of the most magnificent buildings in London. Soon after, this small area of London attracted reformers who changed health care in fundamental ways that shape today's services. Exploring with Nick Black, a leading expert on health care, you will see the first hospital for children in England, the only hospital for Italians, the first hospital established by nurses, the first hospital for those paralysed and epileptic, and the medical school created by and for women who were otherwise excluded from such a career. While Bloomsbury is rightly recognised as the home of radical changes in literature, art and penal reform, it was also a cradle of reform for health care. Explore Ancient Alleyways in the Footsteps of Dickens Audio Tour by VoiceMap
Explore Ancient Alleyways in the Footsteps of Dickens Audio Tour by VoiceMap

On this walk we will see actual places that Dickens visited as well as places mentioned in his novels. We start at St Paul's Cathedral, which dominated London in Victorian times. It was near here that the young Dickens worked as a freelance reporter in Doctor’s Commons. He witnessed the old-fashioned and slightly ridiculous legal practice here which led to his contempt of the law, and his famous saying in Oliver twist ‘The law is a ass’. We then wend our way through ancient alleyways and churchyards, such as St Peter's, Cheapside, where the young Dickens first arrived in London. In ‘A Christmas Carol’ Ebenezer Scrooge sees the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come on the steps of the Royal Exchange. Nearby we discover the George and Vulture Inn where Mr Pickwick stayed just before his trial for Breach of Promise in ‘The Pickwick Papers’. The audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

Rebels, Radicals and Rough Justice: Clerkenwell Audio Tour by VoiceMap
Rebels, Radicals and Rough Justice: Clerkenwell Audio Tour by VoiceMap

The walk starts at Farringdon which was the terminus of the first Underground Line in the world. The title – Rebels, Radicals and Rough Justice - characterises the rest of the route. We will be following the footsteps of Wat Tyler, leader of the Peasant’s Revolt of 1381, and William Wallace, Scottish patriot. Both met violent deaths in Smithfield, where cattle were also slaughtered until 1855.

We also meet Lenin who lived here before he overthrew the Russian Tsar. We'll see three ancient monasteries and London’s oldest hospital. We'll finish by the Old Bailey, the Central Criminal Court. This was built on the site of Newgate prison, where many famous inmates were incarcerated before being publicly executed until the 19th Century.
