The Birmingham Music School is situated on Branston Street in the Hockley area of Birmingham. The school is the only Yamaha Music Point in the city. It offers a range of music tuition courses in guitar, keyboard, bass and drums, as well as general music notation and theory. Free trial lessons are available, and one service, the “play for keeps” course, specialises in introducing younger children as young as six years old to playing an instrument. In addition the school offers an educational service where a free Yamaha Music Roadshow is taken out to visit schools in Birmingham and Smethwick. This scheme can help to inspire and encourage young people to want to learn a musical instrument. The Roadshow has been featured on television. The school offers an innovative teaching style on a range of instruments. At The Birmingham Music School anyone from age 8 upwards, including adults, can participate in rock and pop courses in groups of 6-8 students. In the Guitar Encounters course, electric instruments are provided and the emphasis is on having fun while being compatible with the National Curriculum. Bass lessons are also offered. In Drum Encounters, students are able to use a state-of-the-art Yamaha drum studio. Keyboard lessons follow the Trinity Music syllabus, guiding students from beginner to Grade 8 standard. In all lessons, the emphasis is on a combination of learning new skills and techniques whilst playing contemporary music and having fun.
