Everything You Need to Know Before a Bikini Wax (But Were Afraid to Ask)
If you’ve never had a bikini wax, the whole situation sounds like a bit of a nightmare: you’re hanging out with a stranger who’s wearing pants, but you yourself are not wearing pants (and that stranger is planning on ripping hair from you're most delicate parts!).
But it doesn't have to be a nightmare, we've complied the most common questions ladies want to know before they take the plunge.
What types of waxing are there?
There are 2 types, warm wax or strip wax, is applied thinly to the skin with a spatula. A waxing cloth is pressed onto the wax and then swiftly removed, taking both wax and hair with it. The other is hot wax, which is applied more thickly to the skin with a spatula, it then sets and the wax is pulled off without the need for a strip.
Should I trim beforehand?
Simple answer: No - the wax won’t be able to get a hold on your hair and won’t work as well.
If you shave, pluck, or perform any kind of hair maintenance, don’t do it for two to three weeks before you go get waxed, it leads to a cleaner, less painful wax.
How close to the appointment should I shower?
You should definitely shower in the 24 hours before your wax, beauticians might refuse to wax you if you aren't clean or you could be presented with a packet of baby wipes and be told to clean yourself - cringe!
Are ingrown hairs a problem?
No they shouldn't be a problem, however, If you want to get rid of ingrown hairs around your bikini area for your own sake, use an exfoliating scrub on the area which should help to free those stubborn hairs.
Can I talk with my beautician during waxing?
Yes, in fact, talking can help distract from whatever discomfort you’re feeling, so the wax may seem to take less time.
Can I keep my underwear on?
Depends on the type of wax, for most bikini waxes, yes, but for Brazilian and Californian no, more about types of waxes soon...
Does waxing hurt?
One word, yes. Hair is being pulled from the root in a very sensitive area, some people find it more painful than others. If you do find it very painful a handy tip is to take two paracetamol half an hour before you appointment.
What are the different types of waxes?
Bikini Wax - This is the most straightforward wax, taking care of stray hairs that peek out of the panty line and giving a general 'tidy up'.
Extended Bikini Wax - Tidier than the general bikini wax and suitable for women who swim a lot or are going on holidays. The waxing will go one or two inches inwards more than the regular bikini bax.
Brazilian Wax - This wax removes EVERYTHING (yes, front and back) and leaves a small, thin 'landing strip' of hair on the front.
Californian - Leaves slightly more hair than the Brazilian but still has avery tidy appearance.
Hollywood - Removes everything, yup all gone.
Vjazzle - Add some bling to your 'area' with stick on gems in different shapes, colours and styles for the extra WOW factor!
