A little about Debenhams
Debenhams can trace its roots all the way back to 1778. A drapers store was established 44 Wigmore Street in the West End of London by William Clark. The store sold expensive fabrics, cloths, gloves, bonnets and parasols. By 1813 William Debenham became an investor. The firm was rebranded Clark & Debenham. The new outfit opened their first store outside of London in 1818 in Cheltenham. They decided to replicate the success of the Wigmore Street store and held the same stock.
Clark & Debenham excelled in Victorian fashion and specialised in attire for family mourning. In the 1800's there was a strict dress code which widows and female relatives would adhere too for funerals. Clark & Debenham supplied attire for this Victorian etiquette.
In 1851 the firm underwent another change. Clement Freebody invested in the firm and it was rebranded again as Debenham & Freebody. The firm continued expansion on its retail store but also established a wholesale business. This aspect of the business would sell cloth and fabric to other UK dressmakers and retailers.
Debenhams LTD was incorporated in 1905 and in 1919 the company merged with Marshal & Snellgrove going on to purchase Harvey Nichols in 1920. By 1928 Debenhams became a public company and has continued to grow ever since. In 1950 Debenhams owned 84 different companies and 110 stores. Debenhams is now a British establishment and one of the best known retailers in the country.
In 1999 Debenhams made plans to start selling their products online and now debenhams.com is one of the biggest online retailers in the UK. The Debenhams online store offers loads of different products like womenswear, menswear, children's clothing, furniture, toys, gifts, kids electronics and much, much more. Debenhams also offer free delivery on orders over £40 and free next day click and collect on orders over £20. If you need international delivery then Debenhams has you covered.
