We can only assume from all the positive reviews, that this restaurant has new management and kitchen staff? This is not a one-off 'we had a bad meal review', it is not possible that anything coming out of this kitchen in the near future, is anything that you would call close to Italian cuisine!
The mere surprise that the starters arrived almost immediately after ordering, was either down to the 'chef'-come clairvoyant's crystal ball, or food that is very much pre-prepped and 'ready to go'. Sure enough, just as soon as we had finished our starters (including a pretty poor attempt at bruschetta), the crystal ball kicked in again and the porridge porcini risotto and piping hot chicken arrived... It was verging on one plate being replaced with another (we didn't hear the microwave ding from where we were, so assuming there's a mute function these days with current technology, or the downstairs kitchen is out of earshot).
We very much appreciate ordering through Groupon often receives a reduced menu (and potentially surcharges on some courses offered), but please be aware Groupon users, that you will pay £5 or £10 more for any main course that is not over-cooked pasta or microwaved pre-prepped risotto. We have eaten in many Italian restaurants that offer a reduced Groupon menu, with simple starters and perfectly cooked mains. I left all but a few mouthfuls of the risotto. My boyfriend's '£5 surchage' chicken came with mixed veg that although fresh, were completely tasteless and managed to appear like another freezer-to-microwave turn from the magicians in the kitchen!
We would absolutely welcome the Sardinian owner to get in touch (we'll certainly be in touch with you) to maybe check your restaurant and menus a few times a year. There were so many spelling errors on the Groupon menu, it appeared quite obvious those preparing it, both did not speak Italian, or understand basic Italian cuisine (no h in funghi, no h in bruschetta were two notable examples). Any respecting Italian would not be letting this food come out of their restaurant - even if you're trying to make some quick cash out of the multitudes of tourists.
We are disappointed to find this establishment ranks above the top 2000 Italian restaurants out of 2002 currently on Tripadvisor. There are undoubtedly plenty of other 'tourist sharks' out there. Whilst the waitress was perfectly nice through all our complaints and suggestions that risotto cannot possibly arrive in 2mins if cooked properly and questions about how orders can arrive so quickly, it did all make us feel that Gordon Ramsey wouldn't have to work hard to produce an excellent episode here!
As a three course offering, we were honestly out of the restaurant in around 20mins - admittedly, we did ask for the bill and the tiramisu to go. We really didn't believe it would be worth waiting for, took one look and saw all we needed to...
In case anyone thinks this review is another Italian saying 'the food in England is not as good as in Italy'... here's the 'Englishman's perspective from my boyfriend':
The best comparison I can make is that Il Castelletto is like a road-side cafe or Costco attempting 'Italian' offerings. At least with both of these establishments, their 'Italian-themed fayre would likely be on full view, for you to decide, whether or not you want to engage in tackling it..
Whilst this review is tongue-in-cheek, we were seriously thoroughly disappointed and will never-ever even consider setting foot in this so-called restaurant again.
